Elle a eu pour vocation, dès l´origine, de favoriser le développement de la création la plus actuelle et d´en diffuser la connaissance. Créée par Alain Dominique Perrin, président, et dirigée par Hervé Chandès, la Fondation Cartier est la première fondation privée dédiée à l´art contemporain dans l´histoire du mécénat français. Située depuis 1994 au 261 boulevard Raspail à Paris, dans le célèbre bâtiment de verre et de métal dessiné par Jean Nouvel, elle s´est forgée un style original, reconnu sur la scène internationale. The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain The Fondation Cartier has been fostering contemporary artists since 1984. Its main purpose has always been to encourage the creation of cutting-edge artworks and to bring them into the public eye. Created by chairman Alain Dominique Perrin and directed by Hervé Chandès , the Fondation Cartier is the first private foundation dedicated to contemporary art in the history of French cultural patronage. Since 1994 its home has been the famous glass and steel building designed by Jean Nouvel at 261 Boulevard Raspail in Paris.
